Ghana is rarely associated with scuba diving, and for good reason: the country does not offer the clear-water reef diving that most recreational divers look for. Instead, diving in Ghana is shaped by Atlantic Ocean conditions, river sediment, and limited diving infrastructure. As a result, scuba diving is best viewed as an occasional, exploratory activity, not a primary reason to visit.
Most diving activity takes place along the Atlantic coastline, near areas such as Accra, Ada, and Takoradi. Dive sites are generally sandy or rocky seabeds, artificial structures, or nearshore formations rather than coral reefs.
Dive conditions are the main limiting factor in Ghana:
- Visibility is often low, typically 3–10 meters (10–30 feet), due to sediment from rivers and coastal currents
- Currents can be strong and variable
- Sea conditions can change quickly
- Water temperatures are warm year-round, averaging 75°F–84°F
Because of these conditions, Ghana is not suitable for beginner divers or training dives. The diving infrastructure in Ghana is very limited. There are only a small number of operators, and scuba diving is not widely promoted or standardized. Equipment availability can be inconsistent, and certification courses are uncommon.
Prices vary widely depending on logistics and equipment availability, and diving can feel expensive relative to dive quality, simply because of low volume and operational challenges.
